Democracy is Dead – Voter Disenfranchisement

In this episode we discuss the Trump Regime's and the GOPs plans to end free elections in this country and why we call the podcast DemocracyisDead.

SAVE Act:

Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. Jan 3 congressional republicans.

If enacted, the SAVE bill would require all voters to prove their American citizenship in-person when registering or updating their voter registration, providing specific documentation such as a passport or birth certificate.

According to an analysis of the bill by the Brennan Center for Justice, the SAVE Act would undermine voting rights and disenfranchise tens of millions of American voters, as more than 21 million citizens lack these documents.

The bill’s in-person requirement could also disenfranchise approximately 60 million rural voters, who would have to travel great distances to register to vote.

While this may sound easy for many Americans, the reality is that more than 140 million American citizens do not possess a passport and as many as 69 million women who have taken their spouse’s name do not have a birth certificate matching their legal name.

I’m sure that all the layoffs that are occurring will spare the people who issue passports so that they can get these 140 million people passports in the next four years so they can exercise their right to vote.

Americans abroad vote blue in overwhelming numbers. From 2020 to April of 2024, 77.65% voters using the voting tool votefromabroad.org registered as left leaning. 17.2% registered as having no party preference. Only 2.5% registered as Republican.

Executive order passed by Trump on voting rights. March 26 2025

The order requires individuals to show documents proving their citizenship in order to register to vote – permitting only a narrow set of documents, such as a passport, that many Americans do not have easy access to. It also attempts to bar states from counting mail ballots that arrive after Election Day, even if they were mailed and postmarked on or before Election Day. Currently, 18 states allow mail ballots to be counted as long as they are postmarked by Election Day.

The order also directs the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to decertify any voting systems that use barcodes or QR codes on ballots — a technology commonly used across the country. The EAC is now tasked with reviewing all certifications within 180 days.

This move could force states and counties to replace their voting machines on short notice — without any new funding.

“Imagine buying new equipment, and now it’s suddenly banned,” said Connecticut Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas, who recently approved a $20 million purchase of new ballot scanners. “There is no remedy for that in the order.”
